A Valentine Card Made With An Image Created By AI

The Cupid and the birds were created with Dall-E, an artificial intelligence program that generates designs based on text criteria given to it.

In a previous blog posting https://papercraftetc.blogspot.com/2024/01/a-new-way-of-designing-papercrafts-with.html, I mentioned that I created designs with Dall-E 3.  The Cupid and the birds in my Valentine card were created with this program.  I now have a dilemma, how do I present my work?  The majority of the design was created by me but I used AI, for two elements of it, the bird and Cupid.  I did have to point edit the Cupid to get a continuous path.  The birds, however, I kept the same. Can I say that I made the card or do I now have to share my work and say it was AI that made it too? Will readers of my blog now doubt my work and think that AI has done the design each time I produce something, even if that is not true? It is a real world question.  Can we now believe our eyes and ears as to how something was produced or said? Does it matter if a human produces something or artificial intelligence produces it? Artificial Intelligence poses a lot of new questions and challenges. 

All Philosophical questions aside, here is the Valentine card in PDF form. I used Neenah brand 65 lb White Gold metallic cardstock from Office Depot.

2024 National Educational Technology Plan

Elaine Wolfe and Dr. Cynthia Solomon

I attended the 2024 National Educational Technology Plan Launch at the White House on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024. I was the guest of Dr. Cynthia Solomon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynthia_Solomon During the program she was recognized as a pioneer in the field of educational technology. Cynthia is an icon and continues to share her knowledge. I learned TurtleStitch from her https://papercraftetc.blogspot.com/2021/10/making-computer-coded-embroidery.html and now help her manage a new group of TurtleStitch users through YouTube. The 2024 National Educational Technology Plan https://tech.ed.gov/NETP/ emphasized the significance of technology in education. The power of technology was highlighted by the needs which arose during COVID-19. The focus of the plan is on enhancing learning through high-quality technology, ensuring broadband availability for everyone, and promoting inclusivity with equity in mind.

This plan, the first in 8 years, aims to be a flagship for K-12 education, representing a commitment to the future. Crafted with input from one thousand people in focus groups, it envisions a shared future where technology is accessible to all. The American Rescue Plan has played a role in closing the digital access divide by providing affordable broadband access to 22 million people.

Government agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Education, have collaborated to ensure safe technology use and to prevent cyberattacks. The plan also emphasizes empowering teachers for an active learning experience, proposing lifelong professional development as a comprehensive roadmap.

Initiated in September 2022, the plan addresses digital use, active learning, problem-solving with a real-world audience, and aims to close the digital divide. It outlines expectations and builds a systematic support system, offering a universal design for a learning framework and promoting the use of technology in a safe environment.

A New Way of Designing Papercrafts Using Artificial Intelligence, DALL-E 3

After attending a Logo Foundation Workshop entitled "AI and the End of Programming as We Know It"  and exploring some of the capabilities of artificial intelligence in ChatGPT, I learned that there was a graphical extension to it. It is called DALL-E 3.  

DALL-E 3 is amazing. https://openai.com/dall-e-3. The images that it creates are very pleasing to the eye. You start out by typing in criteria for your image. The results can vary with the descriptors that you use.  Using a more descriptive  explanation, will result in a more precise image. For papercrafting, I recommend using the words "coloring page" or  “line art”in your description to get a flat, black and white image or the words that I used in the photo below. This will allow you to copy and paste the image into the Silhouette software. Once the image is copied, use the Trace function to trace the image. I recommend varying the threshold and the high/low pass filters to get a more accurate trace.

In the above photo, I show the trace menu and the threshold value that I used to trace the image. The result is on the bottom left.  The traced image was too busy so I chose to use the cupid only by releasing the compound path and deleting the extraneous objects.  The resulting image was the cupid with a bow and arrow that needed to be pointed edited to create a continuous path. I extended the one leg of the cupid to intersect with the main image. I then welded the leg to the main image. It is a tedious process to point edit and manipulate the image but the result is very pleasing.

Asking ChatGPT To Code An Armenian Six Point Star

I will be attending a Logo Foundation Workshop entitled "AI and the End of Programming as We Know It". It was suggested to become familiar with ChatGPT, https://chat.openai.com/auth/login before the conference.  I am currently exploring the origin of the Armenian Six Point Star and I thought it would be interesting to see if ChatGPT could explain the history of the Armenian Star.  I think it did a good job with the explanation of the Armenian Star's history.

I then asked it to code the Armenian Star in TurtleStitch.  It failed miserably in coding the star.  It took six iterations before it coded it correctly.  I then decided to sass ChatGPT and asked it if it was sure that the code was correct.  It then gave me four more incorrect iterations.  

My conclusion is that ChatGPT is not ready to end programming as we know it currently. ChatGPT is just guessing at the contents of the program. Update:

After attending the workshop, I learned that everything on the internet has been scraped. Models are based upon this information and there are intrinsic biases in its information.  If the information that was placed on the internet is incorrect, ChatGPT will propagate the error because it does not validate the information. The future of education will be changing rapidly and it is hard to predict its path.

My belief is that ChatGPT is nothing more than a correlational system similar to regression. It doesn't do any calculations...it doesn't know the rules of math. It takes information from the internet and correlates it to the current problem. Therefore, the answer returned by ChatGPT can be wrong.  Maybe in the future, with more data, ChatGPT will become more refined. ChatGPT has a long way to go before you can trust the answer it returns with absolute certainty.

The following dialogue is from ChatGPT.  I first asked it to explain the history and then to code the Armenian Six Point Star.
